Avondale Youth Assistance Honorees

It was a big night on Wednesday, March 25, for these two Crusaders, and we’re proud to share the reason! Lutheran Northwest Seniors Cullen Greene and Carter Lee were recognized by Avondale Youth Assistance at a district-wide awards night at Avondale Middle School: Cullen for Leadership and Carter for Community Service. These two exceptional young men have displayed these traits in spades from their first days here as Freshmen at LHNW, and they’ve continued to grow and mature into strong role models in their years as Crusaders – strong CHRISTIAN role models (which Avondale doesn’t recognize but we do!).

Here’s what Mrs. Baughman had to say about these students that she nominated:

Cullen Greene has been involved in Student Council throughout his four years of high school. This year has certainly been his best year, as he has been an amazing leader of the entire student body as the President of Student Council and a Captain in our Leadership Development Program. He has learned how to solve problems creatively as obstacles have arisen and challenges have occurred within the student body and the student council board. I have seen him encourage classmates of all ages to be involved with such grace and charisma that others want to do what he is asking them to do. He functions by the mentality that “leaders go first” which is such a rare character trait for a high school student. Cullen has an attitude that everyone belongs and everyone is included. This attitude has permeated throughout the student body as he is such a positive role model for his peers. Cullen will certainly be missed after he graduates.

Carter Lee has a passion for community service that flows through his veins. Over his four years of high school he has organized countless gathering events that have provided an avenue for students to give back to their community. These gathering events have included multiple years of school supply drives, blanket donations for the homeless, can and non-perishable food drives, Christmas gifts for inner-city kids in Pontiac and Detroit through Gifts for All God’s Children, preparing sack lunches for the homeless with a group of students, and a coin drive for purchasing diapers and supplies for local pregnancy centers. Carter’s heart is loaded with generosity and the desire to help others. He is an outstanding choice for the Community Service Award.

The event program included a quote from Ralph Waldo Emerson: “What lies behind us and what lies before us are tiny matters compared to what lies within us.” Thank you, Cullen and Carter, for sharing those gifts from God that are within each of you during your time at Lutheran Northwest.
